SOLID 4TH IN GRAND PRIX

For the second weekend in a row against tough competition, David Nichols Racing was placed 4th. We saw a different drive from David this week. Last weekend in Hobart he was wide and trying the big passing moves. However at Latrobe in the Grand Prix, David was using low line and just picking off other drivers and steadily moving up through the field.

HEAT 1

The first heat was going to be tough. David was in grid nine at the back of the pack. There were many top drivers ahead and progress would certainly be earned. Once the green went down, David went up underneath his old mate Mick Nicola from Victoria. Jamie Williams was next in the DNR firing line and he was put back a spot the following circulation. Steve Latham was the next driver to see the No. 3 Bullet sail on by. David quickly edged away from Latham to be pressuring his old car now driven by Queenslander Wayne Randall. Both David and Randall got by West Aussie Joel Handford before a stoppage. Handford was put back into position at the restart which made David sixth. He was able to round up Randall at the restart to finish a creditable fifth.

HEAT 2

Once again David was down near the back end of the grid on number seven. David was tangled up with Handford on the first lap with a complete restart ordered. David all over the back of Sam Hughes and Latham trying top get further up the order. Shortly afterwards comeback veteran Anthony Manion spun his car. At the restart David sat in fifth place. David was able to nail Hughes on the restart and pressured Latham all the way home.

Start: 7th

Finish: 4th

HEAT 3

For the final heat of the first night of racing, David was on grid four next to Nicola. David had advanced to second by the end of the first lap to right with eventual Grand Prix winner Jarrod Harper. David looked to be the faster car but was unable to get by a determined Harper. Nicola was closing in and made it a three way race. Harper won the heat. David and Nicola crossed the line together, with David getting the nod for second.

Start: 4th

Finish 2nd

HEAT 4

David had his first front row start for the weekend in heat four. He was on grid two next to New South Wales driver Wayne Brimms. David lost the start to Brimms. As the race got going, Brimms did not extend his lead more than his good start. Adam Beechey brought out the only caution with three laps to go. David held on for a handy 28 points in second place.

Finish 2nd

HEAT 5

David was on grid five for the final heat. He was able to advance to fourth, disposing of Beechey.

NEVILLE HARPER POLE SHUFFLE

As of the 2009 Grand Prix, the pole shuffle will be named after the late great Neville Harper who passed away in 2008.

David was able to hold position against Grant Hopkins, but unfortunately could not beat Kevin Purton over the line.

FINAL

David was in grid eight for the start of the main event. Over the early laps the field was sorting themselves out. Local Latrobe driver Gil Aylett caused the first stoppage of the 50 lap journey. Aylett was in the wall in turn one. The team had decided that better line on the track would be the low line and set the car up accordingly. David spent many laps trying to work over Brimms. In the early stages of the race the high line was still giving plenty of drive. David pressed on and eventually got past the New South Wales champion. Soon afterwards he was to get Latham and move up another spot. A couple of laps later David dived under Nicola to move into fifth place. Nicola was still running high and repassed David two laps later. Once again the Nichols Bullet got past the Nicola Rocket. Nicola was not to get by again. Randall was David’s next target. That target was also successfully dealt with by and inside pass. The chance of a podium was looking a possibility. David was right with Australian champ Jamie McHugh. David got caught up a little with lapped cars. McHugh was able to get a little breathing space. Over the closing laps with nothing to lose, David threw the car to the highline in hope of passing McHugh. Unfortunately the team did not make it to the podium. The whole team did their families, friends, sponsors and fans proud with a superb effort all weekend.

DAVID’S THOUGHTS

“We did a good job over the weekend. It’s the race everyone wants to win and it’s a hard race to win. We’ve had a tough deal in the race over the last few years, so come home in fourth is a good result. I really thought we had a shot at third. That would have been a great result for the team. The boys deserve it. The crowd only hears my name out there but it’s certainly a team effort. Now we’ll go and try and win the state title.”

The team are now on ‘holidays’ as the next race meeting is not until March 14th at Latrobe which will be the 2009 Tasmanian championship.
